Lost History #3: I See Dead People
1976 Sawyer’s dad kills his mom and then himself.  Sawyer gets a new pen. 80s (?) Horace builds a cabin for himself and his wife.  Also Jacob, Smoky and Claire. 1988 Rousseau and company crash on island, meet Jin. Jin’s like, 당신은 무엇을, 프랑스 숙녀 에 대해서 이야기하고 있는가? On their way to the radio tower, Rousseau’s friends go into the Temple. Magic 8 Ball says, Not a great decision. ...

Lost Timeline #2: That 70s Show
1977 Sawyer and Juliet nest.  Jin speaks English.  Miles stalks his dad. Horace Goodspeed and now wife Amy (of dead Paul and Amy) have a baby, Ethan.  The infant immediately beats the snot out of a 10 year old girl, steals her baby doll. Jack, Kate and Hurley show up.  Sawyer’s like, you gotta go Dharma.  Jack’s like — I’m a janitor? Come on! Kate finds out...

Lost Timeline #1: Creation to 1977.
As I rewatched Seasons 4 & 5 of Lost I compiled a handy dandy Lost timeline. Today, Part 1: Creation to 1977. Ancient History God creates the universe. Later: Esau and Jacob chill on an island.  Jacob wants to see humanity show its potential.  Esau wants to kill Jacob.  God is like, no can do. Later: giant four-toed fans of Anubis build a statue of him on the island. Or, alternatively, having...

One Week to Lost: Musings
The last four months I’ve been rewatching the whole Lost opus, in preparation for the final season, which begins one week from today.  I thought this week I’d post some stuff theories, a timeline and, like everybody else, my questions. So, at the end of Season we discovered that all along the Man in Black/Smoky/Esau was moving pieces around to “win the game” with Jacob....

Because I Said So
I googled “Because I Said So” for a post I wrote on my other blog (Shameless self-advertising: jimmcdermott.blogspot.com).  And this is the picture that came up. My question is, if you met this Keira Knightley in a dark alley, would she still sound like something out of Jane Austen?  I think I’m hoping for something a little more Metallica.

Avatar in China →
An interesting story from the Melbourne Age: China pulls Avatar from most of its movie houses, over concerns that the plight of the Na’vi might too closely parallel the experience of its own minority populations…

Team Coco
I never much watch late night shows anymore.  Jon Stewart, absolutely, but the networks…meh.  They go for all the easy targets.  Oh, another joke about The Situation.  Wow, better stay up for that! Can’t wait to hear the newest gag about Tiger! Grblm. That’s the dulcet sound of me horfing in my mouth. Sweet. But I’ve been riveted by the Conan/NBC situation.  Every day...

Kimmel Criticizes Leno on the Leno Show →
I don’t know if you watched this last night, but it’s the most straightforward critique of Leno’s move back to 11:30 I’ve seen. Jimmy Kimmel, who had impersonated Leno two nights before, was invited on the Leno Show to do a bit of schtick. And he used it to really put it to Leno. You really wish Leno would try to explain himself, because it all seems pretty darn rotten. ...

Giving Denzel Some Due
Sometimes a good test of a film for me is whether or not something from it comes back to me in the days following.  And today (while I was praying, no less!), a couple moments from Book of Eli unexpectedly came wandering through.  At one point in the film someone asks Eli if he reads, and he tells them, “every day”.  It’s the Bible that’s he reading, and today I recalled...

Book of Eli
Just returned from a preview of Book of Eli. (Thank you, Grace Hill Media.)  The story: A superfast, supersensitive Denzel Washington wanders through post-apocalyptic USA, trying to shepherd the last remaining Bible to a place where it will make a difference. (Note to the writer: the developing (i.e. likely to be overlooked in case of a nuclear war) parts of the world actually have Bibles,...

My boss and I just had a lengthy conversation...
nerdshares: This is what happens when you’re in the office with no issue to work on. You want to add to the party? Try asking, how do we refer to this last decade that just finished?  The Aughts?  (Why does that make me feel like I live with Teddy Roosevelt?)  The Naughts? (Have we been bad?)  The Double O’s? (Doesn’t that sound like a high school dance group, or James Bond movie...

Hurt Locker
So I finally caved in and saw The Hurt Locker. Why I had avoided it: Iraq plus Hollywood = Tirade or Action Adventure Nonsense or Both. Or so I thought.  The Hurt Locker certainly has some established cliches, like the soldier who can’t leave, or war making people crazy. But it creates quite an atmosphere, too.  It’s right up there with any classic war film for the way it brings you...

Smurfy
Alright, it’s been like, forever since I posted here.  Like, Avatar wasn’t even out yet. It had not yet totally changed the world we live in. Rather than a possible Academy Award Nominee, people were saying it was going to be basically this: (Question: Does replacing children with smurfs in ads work?) Come to think of it, it sort of was that. Just more realistic.  I mean, if there...
